Some places on an island take longer to find. Solomos Winery is one of them — tucked at the foot of Zakynthos’ old Venetian Castle, in a part of town that feels unhurried and quietly proud. The family has been rooted here since 1815. The winery itself came later, in 1989, born from a decision to do something that most winemakers on the island were not doing: to work exclusively with the grape varieties that belong to Zakynthos and nowhere else.
Pavlos. Goustolidi. Avgoustiatis. Names that mean little outside these hills, and everything within them.
When you arrive, you are not handed a price list and a glass. You are welcomed. The tasting room — a considered space where old Zakynthian stone meets clean, modern lines — sets the tone for what follows: unhurried, generous, worth your full attention.
The centrepiece of the visit is The Legacy Tasting, a flight of four wines that tell the story of the estate and the island in the only language that really works — the one you taste. Each pour carries something of the local soil, the sea air, the particular quality of light that Zakynthos holds onto longer than most places. Between sips, the table is laid with things from the estate itself: olive oil pressed from trees on the property, served on bread the way it has always been served here — simply, and very well.
Then comes the cellar.
Descending underground, the temperature drops and the quiet deepens. French oak barrels line the walls, each one holding a wine that is still becoming itself. Your guide will walk you through what happens in the dark, in the patience, in the years between harvest and bottle. It is one of those rare moments in travel where you feel you have been shown something real.
The experience lasts around an hour and a half. Tastings are offered Monday to Saturday between 11:00 and 16:00, with sessions beginning at 11:00, 12:45 and 14:30. Booking in advance is recommended.
Yes, advance booking is strongly recommended. Sessions are scheduled at fixed times — 11:00, 12:45 and 14:30 — and availability is limited to keep the experience intimate and personal. Walk-ins may be accommodated subject to availability, but we cannot guarantee a place without a reservation.

Transfers are not included in the standard booking. However, if you would like us to arrange transport from your hotel or accommodation, we are happy to organise this at an additional cost. Please let us know when booking.
The wine tasting is designed for adults. Children are welcome to accompany their parents during the cellar visit, but the tasting itself is for guests aged 18 and over.
Absolutely — bottles are available for purchase directly at the winery at the end of your visit. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring a piece of Zakynthos home with you.
The cellar tour and the story of the estate are fascinating in their own right. However, as the tasting is the centrepiece of the visit, it may not be the ideal activity for guests who do not drink wine at all.
Smart casual is perfectly appropriate. The underground cellar is cooler than the outside temperature, so a light layer is recommended, particularly in the early morning sessions.
The tasting room is accessible. The underground cellar involves a descent of stairs and may not be fully accessible for guests with limited mobility. Please contact us in advance if you have specific requirements and we will do our best to accommodate you.
The winery is open Monday to Saturday. Tasting sessions begin at 11:00, 12:45 and 14:30. Last entry is at 14:30.
